You are ready to read Chapter 1!
Before you begin reading, you will need to put
together a diary. You will use this diary throughout the whole book.
There are several materials you will need for your
final diary:
1.
1 piece of construction paper
2.
8 pieces of the writing connection papers
3.
1 “Dear President…” paper
4.
1 “If I went to Washington D.C. I would
bring…” paper
5.
1 “If I went to Washington D.C. I would
want to visit…” paper
6.
1 book review paper
Each
of these items will be on the front table.
Directions to creating your own diary:
1.
Cut the construction paper in half. One piece will be the front cover and
the other will be the back cover.
2.
Take the 8 pieces of writing connection papers and place
face down on top of the front cover construction paper.
3.
Place the “Dear President…” paper face down on top of the writing connection
papers.
4.
Place the “If I went to Washington D.C. I would bring…” then the “If I went to Washington D.C. I would want
to visit…” face down on top of the “Dear President…” paper.
5.
Place the book review paper face down on top of the “If I went to Washington D.C.
I would want to visit…” paper
6.
Finally place the back cover construction
paper on top of the book review paper.
7.
Staple all the pages together on the left
side.
8.
Decorate the front cover by including your name, the title of the book, the books author.
As
you re-read the chapter, think about the reader response starters. This will
help when it comes time to writing in your diary.
When
you are finished reading the first chapter, take out your diary and look at the
list of reader response starters and begin writing a few sentences. Make sure you have the chapter number
and the date at the top of the page. Hand in your diary to be looked at it will
be given back to you if you need to make any changes.
